BAROLO 2015

  • Year: 2019
  • Guide: Simplybetterwines.com
  • Score: 91
  • Note: A touch of maple syrup sweetness here, followed by lots of very ripe fruit, a bit leafy perhaps and with an interesting juxtaposition of over ripe and ripe with violet pastille top notes. Rich, and fairly tense in the mouth, just a lovely wine full of wild cherry fruit with a bramble aspect to it, broadening our on the backend. Tannins are a hint dry, if very fine. Decidedly old school in style. Dry, clean, and soil driven with fine minerality on the long finish, showing a fine echo of fruit, and a hint of alcohol warmth.

BAROLO VILLERO 2015

  • Year: 2019
  • Guide: Simplybetterwines.com
  • Score: 92
  • Note: This smells fleshy, with, lots of ripeness here, showing ripe if still fresh fruit though with a distinct burnished edge. Air brings out floral and cedar notes. In the mouth this shows impressive volume already, rounded tannins lend structure to the billowing fruit. Tannins are ripe but noble with an edge of austerity but the fruit easily handles the tannins through all but the very end of the finale, where the tannins emerge a bit exposed. Transparent, but a bit tough going today.

BAROLO ROCCHE DI CASTIGLIONE 2015

  • Year: 2019
  • Guide: Simplybetterwines.com
  • Score: 92
  • Note: Tobacco, butchers wax, and dark cherry fruit join on the tight nose. And yet this is generous in the mouth with lovely bright acids lending freshness to the palate and drive to the finish, which shows lovely floral inner mouth perfumes. A bit chewy, energetic but the tannins are a bit dry. Shows, lots of limestone on the long finish, a bit chunky with fruit that shades a touch darker than, say 2013. A more opulent and structured wine.

BAROLO BUSSIA VIGNA MONDOCA 2015

  • Year: 2019
  • Guide: Simplybetterwines.com
  • Score: 93
  • Note: Wild flowers, stones, inky, spicy macerated flowers, all come together on this savory and tight nose which shows with great depth and lots of chinato nuance,. Delicate in the mouth, very fine grained with precise herbal notes and a touch of nuttiness here. This floats across the palate with lovely lightness and detail but it does have significant tannins still with bright acids. In a bit of an awkward phase with the finish showing little fruit and savory, salty tannins, but it’s going to evolve into something nice.
