Note:The limestone-rich soils of Vigna Rionda typically yield a wine that’s long-lived yet slow to develop, so the Oddero family decided to extend its aging regimen beginning with the 2006 vintage. The wine rested in large Austrian casks for four and a half years and in bottle another five. It shows a delicate power and precision at 11 years of age, retaining some fresh fruit to balance the mature notes of truffles and dried red berries, with firm tannins that persist through a long, harmonious finish, suggesting the wine has yet to reach its peak.
BAROLO VILLERO 2013
Year:2017
Guide:Wine&Spirits
Score:91
Note:Initially reticent, this wine opens with notes of dried leaves and white mushrooms, the flavors gripped by rigid, ferrous tannins. After a few hours in the glass, flavors of dark cherry and plum emerge, gathering notes of fresh menthol and subtle spice. It feels coiled and tense, needing a good five years of cellaring to unfurl.
BAROLO 2013
Year:2017
Guide:Wine&Spirits
Score:90
Note:This Barolo feels old-school in its delicate brick-red color and earthy notes of mushroom and dried leaves. The wine’s firm tannins and subtle, savory plum and black-cherry flavors would match well with tagliatelle in a truffled cream sauce.
BAROLO ROCCHE DI CASTIGLIONE 2013
Year:2017
Guide:Wine&Spirits
Score:93
Note:This wine feels spring-loaded, bursting with juicy cherry and fresh plum laced with notes of licorice and mint. Inviting scents of violets and sandalwood add to the wine’s appeal, and it takes on darker tones of woodsmoke and black spice as the firm tannins recede with air. Decant this for a few hours to uncloak those layered fruit flavors and floral tones.
